Can you read a fish’s mind?
Fly fishers claim that they can read trout minds and that the proof lies in their catches. It isn’t unusual for trout fishing venues to implement a catch and release policy. If you want to catch a big one, pay for it and take home a meal of trout, just check that you are at the right venue to do that!
No idea how to fish?
Fishing the Magalies River throughout the Magaliesberg is a fantastic way to relax, commune with nature and feel alone in a crowd of fellow fishing enthusiasts. However, not everyone can read the fish mind and catch successfully without some expert advice. Wayne at Magalies Barbus Haven on the Magalies River off the R24 aims to assist. He offers fly-fishing clinics & corporate team building to bring aspirant fisherfolk in touch with trout habits and the techniques need to catch them. Two of our family really enjoyed a midweek clinic last May.
Not everyone wants to buy expensive equipment before experiencing success and enjoyment in a sport, so Barbus Haven offers fishing equipment for hire during clinics. Wayne also believes in teaching kids to fish and runs children’s parties on request.
No idea where to go for a family fishing outing?
The Magalies River is flanked by many Transvaal Ou Hout trees that folklore claims flank water suitable for trout fishing. Magaliesburg fishing experts can prove the truth of that claim. River fishing for yellowfish good is good at Magalies Barbus Haven while trout and bass are fished in a dam. Book first!
Bass fishing can also be a fun family experience at Bosparadys off the Koster Road. Our little ones loved the entrance drive through the Bosparadys farmyard. They enjoyed a great picnic and caught fish easily. Kingfishers on the R24 towards Rustenburg is also a good place for fly-fishing and picnics on weekends and public holidays. They also offer self-catering accommodation for families or groups that want to be at the fishing waters at the crack of dawn.
Fish don’t feed all day long, so fishermen staying over-night at Segwati north of the Cradle of Humankind often use the midday to ride horses or quad bikes. There is more about this elsewhere on our sidebar menu.
